Starting a Label - What Does It Even Mean These Days Anyway?

Our first concert - Arturo Sandoval!

Our first concert - Arturo Sandoval!

We never knew this was something we were planning on. It just happened.

There were many things I had planned for my life, but I never planned on starting a “Label.” To me, only powerful women like Ani DiFranco were capable of doing such a thing - I was destined to be a 9-5er after obtaining my masters. Then, it just happened. I met Vi and we fell in love instantly - and that love began to blossom on a sunny day at a park, with a ukulele, a guitar, and the right chemistry. We knew right away we wanted to do something with this love for ourselves, and our love for music.

I learned pretty quickly how our strengths co-exist. Vi has been mixing and recording various projects for over a decade, and while I feel I don’t have any specific technical skills of note- I’ve always had a knack for getting things off the ground. We decided on creating this label as a way to organize our love for music into a solid project. At first, it just started with The Siren Aides - a duo created by Vi and I and an idea for what we are aiming for. Now we have been recording a bit here and there for local musicians and added our cover band, The Collusion, to the list.

There are many articles out there that give you a ton of advice and how to start a label, and they have merit. There is definitely a lot to learn on the way. However, as someone who has just gone through it? The best advice I can give you is….

Because if you don’t do it for yourself, who will do it for you?

Because if you don’t do it for yourself, who will do it for you?

Just start! Start and keep going. Learn and grow along the way!

No one ever has all the answers. No one ever really know how to get it right the first time. Just try. If you fail, at least you fail fast. At the end of the day if your love for music is there, you’ll just keep going. You may not be famous, you may not even make much out of it, but it’s all yours.

The music industry is changing rapidly and we have the gift of sharing our love for music with the world without gatekeeping. So here we are with our lil’ shop, just trying to find our way and make things happen - and we’re looking forward to sharing how it’s coming along as it happens.

Through this experience we learned it’s only when you open your arms to the world is the only time you’re ever capable of catching something when an opportunity is thrown straight at your face. You just got to give yourself that opportunity first.

Write it down. Take it in. Make a few adjustments. Then execute! You can do it!

Write it down. Take it in. Make a few adjustments. Then execute! You can do it!

Make time for what you love and put yourself out there - today. Not tomorrow.

I hope this inspires you to follow your dreams (responsibly, of course!) even when the entire world says you can’t. You really can. Just work really fuckin’ hard and if anything, at least you would have learned a thing or three. So thanks to technology and the way the world works these days, starting a label means doing just that - getting to work and making it happen for yourself.
